INTERACt feasibility study

INTERACt - Integration of autonomous trucks into the operational processes of modern container terminals

Motivation

In recent years, the development of autonomous trucks has progressed at a rapid pace. It can be assumed that such vehicles will be ready for series production in the coming years. However, in order to utilize the advantages of autonomous driving along the entire transport chain, it is essential that the vehicles developed primarily for autonomous driving on public roads are also used in terminal areas and integrated into the operational processes there.

Project goals

As part of a feasibility study and a subsequent gap analysis, the project will investigate the extent to which it is possible to use autonomous trucks on public roads and at the same time on closed terminal areas, and what technical, operational and legal requirements must be placed on the vehicles as well as on the transport service providers and terminals involved. The result of the study will be a roadmap outlining the necessary future development steps.

Solution approach

In a first step, the requirements for a truck driving autonomously on a terminal will be analyzed. Technical and operational as well as legal and economic criteria are considered. In the second step, the current state of the art of autonomous truck driving and foreseeable developments are researched in detail.
A feasibility study then examines the extent to which it is already possible and sensible to use autonomous trucks along the entire transport chain. Various realistic deployment scenarios will be examined, not only at container terminals but also in other logistics areas.
As part of a gap analysis, the technical and legal reasons that currently speak against the use of autonomous trucks are outlined. The necessary developments are systematically summarized in a roadmap.
