EASYride - Automated driving in an urban context - Pilot city Munich

Motivation

In the field of local public transport, automated driving opens up new opportunities to positively advance the mobility system in terms of efficiency and environmental friendliness.

Project objective

In order to create networked mobility services for urban areas, new boundary conditions and business areas are being developed for autonomous buses. Munich is to become a model region for the use of automated and networked mobility solutions. To this end, realistic development paths for "mobility transformation" will be developed over the course of the project.

Implementation

In addition to the investigation of legal, regulatory and control framework aspects, the effects of automated and networked fleets will be examined by means of traffic modeling and simulations. In addition to the development of models and scenarios, the findings will also be tested in practice and evaluated in terms of their feasibility, among other things.

KIT's contribution to the project

When introducing automated and networked buses, depots and fleet management offer special opportunities. To this end, the individual process steps involved in preparing public service buses for operation are identified and transferred to a simulation. In the following, various scenarios are simulated and the operating processes that can already be automated today are identified. Based on this, the requirements for a depot management system that organizes automated and networked public service buses are defined.
At the same time, vehicle condition monitoring is being investigated. Even if the driver is no longer present, a status report must still be ensured, which in this case is transmitted automatically. To this end, a machine-learned model is being developed that enables the analysis of the operating states of operationally relevant wear parts. To this end, data is collected, a model is trained and finally validated on a test bench.
