Problem definition

The project aims to objectively assess vision, particularly in people with defective vision who have reduced visual acuity due to refractive errors. Around 2.2 billion people worldwide suffer from defective vision, which can be corrected with spectacles. However, the traditional method of subjective refraction measurement, in which patients test different lens powers to determine the optimal correction, is not always practical, especially for young children or people with disabilities.

Goals

The aim of the project is to develop a method for objective assessment of visual acuity using machine learning and brain-computer interfaces. The use of these technologies should enable a more precise and reliable measurement of visual acuity, especially for people who have difficulty giving concrete feedback.

Realization

The project comprises several subtasks, including the design of the experimental setup, testing of the system, data acquisition with test subjects, data analysis and evaluation, as well as the transfer into a model system.

ITIV participation

The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is leading the project, in particular the Institute for Information Processing Technology (ITIV). M.Sc. Marius Gerdes is the project leader and Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Stork acts as academic supervisor. The ITIV contributes to the scientific expertise and technical implementation of the project.
