TEMPUS Test Field Munich - Pilot Test Urban Automated Road Traffic

Project environment

The TEMPUS project "Test Field Munich - Pilot Test Urban Automated Road Traffic" with project partners KIT, SWM and EBUSCO, among others, started at the beginning of 2021 and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) with around 12 million euros for a period of two and a half years. The Mobility Department of the City of Munich is in charge of the project. The City of Munich and the Free State of Bavaria are building and operating an urban test field for automated and connected vehicles in the north of Munich for the realistic testing of automated and connected vehicles in real traffic situations.

Problem definition

Electric and automated buses could make local public transport safer and more efficient. Articulated buses or those with passenger trailers require too much energy and cannot be used flexibly enough to respond to strongly fluctuating passenger numbers.

Contribution of the KIT

Design of concepts for the platooning of city buses and development of corresponding algorithms for automation. In platooning, several vehicles drive in close succession by means of electronic control. These columns can be adapted as required to the respective demand.

These would then be used in a bus prototype, which the KIT researchers will realize together with SWM and the Dutch electric bus manufacturer EBUSCO by mid-2022. This will then be tested on the new test field for electrified and automated vehicles in local public transport in the north of the Bavarian capital.
