Distributed and decentralized health data infrastructures
To improve healthcare through digitization, the networking of healthcare facilities is becoming increasingly important. Due to the sensitivity of the extremely sensitive personal health data, the protection and privacy of this during storage, transmission and processing plays a fundamental role in the design of health data infrastructures. But what would a technical system for data storage and exchange look like so that it can be used efficiently and for the benefit of patients in the context of care provided by medical professionals? With novel data management, access and identity approaches (e.g. self-sovereign identities, peer-to-peer) based on blockchain and distributed ledger technologies, we want to contribute to the design of future networking solutions.
Data trusts and data donation
The linkage and analysis of medical data by researchers offer enormous potential for medical insights and technical innovation (e.g., for AI approaches) through insight into a person's physical and mental health status and lifestyle. Often, data from diagnostics and studies recorded in medical facilities have not been recorded for secondary use (resulting in poor data quality) or are not available for such use due to lack of consent for research. The goal is to design and develop a data trustee platform which, as a neutral trust authority, reconciles the needs and interests of the stakeholders involved and allows privacy-preserving data access and yet efficient use by research.
Digital sovereignty
The value of data is becoming increasingly clear in the digital age in the context of artificial intelligence and a daily increase in the amount of information available. Accordingly, the need to protect and secure one's own data is growing among the population. Possibilities for the self-sovereign management of health data represent a key element for self-determined and trusting data use and management. To this end, appropriate digital approaches to access and consent management must be designed so that they can be applied in a user-friendly manner by society at large.
