Physical simulation model of a modular operating table in a medical device network

.
.

Environment

Modern medical devices are increasingly characterized by a wealth of variants, assistance systems and interoperability with other devices. Operating tables must also be adapted to specific surgical disciplines and therefore have a modular design.

In contrast to IT systems, cyber-physical systems offer the possibility of detecting manipulations through physical plausibility checks. Powerful simulation options are required to investigate architectural decisions and their impact on functional safety and data security. For this reason, a model for the Gazebo simulation environment is to be created and prepared for use with the "ROS2" robotic middleware. The extent to which the modular structure and the dynamic exchange of individual components can be realized as well as the interaction with other medical devices such as angriography systems or surgical robots will also be investigated.

The work can be carried out in close cooperation with Getinge AB and thus offers the opportunity for a strong practical orientation. It is also possible to spend occasional periods at Getinge's largest development center in Rastatt.

Goals

  • Creation of a simulation model concept for a modular operating table in interaction with partner systems
  • Implementation of the concept in Gazebo
  • Definition and implementation of an interface for integration with ROS 2
  • Evaluation of the created model in comparison with a real system, especially with regard to the training of machine learning methods

Prerequisites

  • Motivation and creative thinking
  • Good knowledge of the programming languages C/C++ & Python
  • Basic knowledge of robotics
  • Basic knowledge of machine learning
  • Knowledge of modeling physical systems for simulation
  • Initial experience with ROS/ROS 2 and Linux desirable
